Oil and gas pipelines have many characteristics that can make it difficult to monitor and maintain: high total mileage, lengthy construction time, potential accidents and the desire to build more and longer pipelines. Because of this constant expansion, monitoring pipelines is now more critical than ever. Traditional inspection methods can no longer meet the requirements to effectively monitor these lines and more scientific and technical methods are needed. This has triggered a new trend in the industry of using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) inspection technology to monitor these pipelines. The use of UAVs to comprehensively and quickly understand the target topography and geomorphology, hydro-meteorology and other information can provide a basis for pipeline route selection. Carrying high-resolution aerial camera and mapping cameras to map and photograph the mission area, and data processing to provide timely geographical and spatial data information of the area, can help provide guidance for route selection in the feasibility study stage of oil and gas pipelines.
